I was adamantly opposed to near shore drilling even before the Florida House, including Rep. Doug Holder, voted to allow it in 2009. Many of us moved to this community because of its natural treasures – for their contributions to both our quality of life and our local economy. A constitutional ban on drilling 3-10 [...]
I was opposed to SB 6 and pleased that Governor Crist vetoed it. It was written and passed hastily – without input from parents, education professionals, local school boards or potential employers. As a result, it took decision-making away from local control in favor of a one-size-fits-all mandate from Tallahassee. Paying teachers more for improved [...]
I’m opposed to Amendment 4. While billed appealingly as a “Hometown Democracy” referendum, it would in effect, be an expensive stranglehold on our local government. Each time a change to the comprehensive land-use plan is proposed – no matter how minor – Sarasota County would have to spend over $400,000 on a special election or [...]
I am in favor of Constitutional Amendments 5 & 6. Over 700,000 Florida voters signed petitions to place them on the ballot. If passed, these non-partisan amendments will require the Legislature to respect community boundaries when drawing district lines. Politicians would no longer be allowed to cherry-pick voters to guarantee re-election. I am also pleased [...]
